Can anyone recommend a good mechanic in the NYC area (including Long Island & Westchester)? I have a 2001 GL1800 and I just blew the left fork seal. The oil literally sprayed in my face as I was riding. No idea why. I understand it needs special tools to replace it and I have heard mixed reviews about some of the shops in the area. I also am wondering if it will severely damage the bike if I ride it to the shop in this condition. (I doubt it, but figured its worth asking.) Any recommendations will be sincerely appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I can't help you with a mechanic, but be extremely careful riding prior to getting the seal fixed. Chances are the front brakes are also covered in fork oil and you may not have much stopping power. You will have to get new brake pads as well. This happened to my '01 last year, they had been leaking oil for a few weeks and I waited too long to get them replaced and the seal blew. I also used this time to upgrade the front springs to Progressive.

Thanks so much for your reply. I hadn't even thought of that possibility.

Don't know how far you want to travel, but I would definitely recommend Sun Cycle 187 Parker Avenue Manasquan, NJ 08736-2830, (732) 223-0484. Quality work, done on time, reasonable prices (how about $20 to install brake pads front and rear - not even worth me getting dirty). Frank is a true professional, a man of integrity, and has never in all my years of going there ever once let me down. He's the only one that works on my bike when it comes time to have work done. By the way I also have a 2001 and I had him replace the front springs with Progressive, new seals, oil and a fork brace.
